Abstract

This study aims to explore the concept of manhood (al-rujūlah) in light of the Qur’an and the Prophetic Sunnah, and to analyze the factors that contribute to cultivating this value within the personality of the Muslim individual. The research focuses on the Prophetic model as a central reference point, while also shedding light on the current condition of Muslim youth in the modern era. The study begins by defining the term manhood, clarifying that in the Islamic worldview, manhood is not confined to physical characteristics or specific stages of age. Rather, it is embodied in assuming responsibility, remaining steadfast upon principles, and fulfilling religious and ethical obligations. The research highlights the major factors that contributed to the formation of manhood in the personality of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), including: early divine upbringing, the Qurayshi environment that instilled values of courage and truthfulness, practical experiences such as shepherding and trade, and the trials that refined his character. These were followed by the burdens of the Prophetic mission, which entrusted him with immense responsibilities from the very beginning of the Islamic call. The research then turns to examine the key causes behind the decline of manhood values among Muslim youth. These causes include: the weakening of faith-based upbringing, the absence of righteous role models, the influence of Western media, the collapse of educational foundations within the family, and the weakening of social structures that are essential for nurturing such values. The study emphasizes the importance of reviving the meanings of manhood, given its foundational role in shaping a balanced Islamic personality—one capable of uplifting the ummah and confronting contemporary challenges. The study concludes by asserting the necessity of drawing inspiration from the Prophetic model in youth education programs, in order to build generations that are strong in faith and conduct, firm in their principles, and able to serve as genuine role models for those who come after them.
