Abstract

The word “الله” is an Arabic word which means one who deserves to be worshipped and also one who loves its creature. The commentators of the Qur’an and scholars of Arabic and Islamic studies differ about its origin. Some of them said that its origin is “وله” while the others said that its origin is “أله”. Due to their basic difference in opinion the meaning of this word also differed. The first one means to love whereas Allah loves his creature and does not hate them while the other means to deserve to be worship whereas Allah is the only who deserves to be worshipped and none deserves it.

The Pre-Islamic Arabs knew this word since their existence. They believed in one who is higher than all but they differed about how to reach him so some of them made deities while the others didn’t. Citations from them have been given in this article.

Apart from it, this word has some qualities whereas Allah is he who created the universe, he nourishes it, he supports it and one day he will ask them what they did in the world. This them has also been supported by the Qur’anic verses
