INTERPRETIION THE CHAPTER TITLES OF SAḤĪḤ AL-BUKHĀRĪ ACCORDING TO IMĀM ABŪ AL-HASAN AL-SINDĪ AL-KABĪR

Abstract

The titles of the chapters of the Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, the most authentic book in Islamic religious literature after the Holy Qurʾān, have been focus of study and research by Muslim scholars since its publication. There is a famous quote concerning the significance of chapter titles and the expertise of Imām Bukhārī in them, which reads as “the fiqh of Imām Bukhārī lies in the titles of the chapters he established”.  The famous scholarly works on this aspect of the Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī are the works of ibn Jamāʿah and Shāh Wali Allah al-Dihlawī, which are published. This paper delves into the explanatory work rendered by Imām Abū al-Ḥasan al-Sindhī, known as al-Kabīr, in his commentary on Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī. For this purpose, the commentary of Imām al-Sindhī has been extensively studied to find out the methodology that he adopted to explain the meanings of these titles of the chapters of Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī. The significance of the work of Imām al-Sindhī lies in the fact that he skillfully explained the meanings of the titles of the chapters and presented some new interpretations shown and discussed in the data of this paper.
