Abstract

Dar-ul-Ulum of Nadwa-tul-Ulama (Lucknow) is one of the great Islamic institutions of India. It was built by Maulana Mungeri and others and was developed by Allamah Shibli Nomani a famous historians of Muslim world. Since its establishment the Nadwa produced numerous celebrated scholars of Arabic and Islamic Studies most prominent among them are Allamah Sayyid Sulaiman Nadwi, Maulana Abdus Salam Nadwi and Maulana Masud Nadwi.Dr. ehtisham Ahmad Nadwi is one of the great critics of modern India. He took higher education from Aligarh and served Kalicut University and Aligarh Muslim University. He is now serving AMU as a visiting Professor of Arabic. He wrote numerous articles and books in Arabic and Urdu. Among the most famous books are ‘Tatawwur al-Naqd al-Adabi inda al-Arab min al-Asr al-Jahili ila Suqut-i-Baghdad’, ‘Arabi Tanqid ka Irtiqa’, ‘Tanqidi Nazriyyat ka Mutalah’, ‘Jadid Arabi Adab ka Irtiqa’ and ‘al-Makhtubah’. Most his books are very useful for the readers of Urdu language. His book ‘al-Makhtuba’ is the first Arabic drama in India. This article deals with his life and works.
