Abstract

Bilgram is one of the most famous areas of the Indian sub-continent. It produced numerous personalities which got name and fame in their mother land as well as in the world. Ghulam Ali Azad Bilgrami is one of them who were not only famous in Arabic poetry but also he wrote on Indian history and other Islamic sciences.Allamah Murtaza Bilgrami Zabidi was also related to this area. His origin was from Iraq. He was born in Bilgram and got brought up in Yemen. Thus he has relation to three countries-Iraq, India and Yemen. Murtaza Bilgrami was famous in preparing ‘Tajul Arus’. This dictionary was recently published from Kuwait. Besides Allamah Bilgrami has expertise over linguistics, Hadith, History and literature. He was a great poet of Arabic language. Sample of his Arabic poetry may be seen in the collection of the articles of Allamah Abu Mahfuzul Karim Masumi which got published from Darul Gharb al-Islami, Beirut.The following article sheds light on his life and works specially on his famous dictionary ‘Tajul Arus’.
