MEANING OF AL-‘IWAJ IN THE HOLY QUR’ĀN
معنى "العِوَج" في القرآن الكريم
Abstract
The Qur’ān is a divine book reveled on the Prophet Muḥammad who was the most eloquent Arab as he said, ‘I am the most eloquent among you because I am frm the Quraish trabie and was brought up in the Banῡ Sa’d trabe’. The Qur’ān was revealed in an Arabic language that is complete from all aspects of literary beauty. The Qur’ān itself said about it, ‘We have revealed the Qur’ān in Arabic wherein there is no deviation from rectitude, that they may become righteous’. (al-Zumar: 29). The Qur’ān is eloquent not in notions but also it evey words are eloquent. Keeping this side in view I am trying to explain one of its words ‘عِوَجٌ’ (‘Iwaj) in the light the Arabic poetry and the Ḥadīth. This word literally means: to turn towards something and has been used for material and spiritual sides both. And as for the Qur’ān it means that this book is free from all demerits; lingual and contextual.
